In all that I teach, my ultimate goal is that students and adults alike will enjoy music more, and use it to bring happiness to others. Without joy, love, and a true feeling for music, it has no meaning. I strive to see each of my students enjoy music, as well as progress to use all of their talents.
I began playing piano at age 6 and have regularly playing ever since. I studied piano performance under Dr. Robert Groves at North Dakota State University, and now I teach 15 private piano and guitar students every week myself. The majority of the past 4 years has been spent teaching 30 students, but I've recently cut back quite a bit. I enjoy working with highly motivated children as well as adults. The majority of my students are ages 6-12, but I have a few additional adult students. Most of my playing in college was classical and technical, but now that I generally play for myself, I mostly play solo piano pieces I've composed. I have a good knowledge of theory, but playing by the ear and from the heart seems to suit me much more. I'm always looking for new opportunities to teach, so if you have a particular need, feel free to contact me below.
I've played guitar for nearly 5 years, but learned quickly because of piano ability I acquired at an earlier age. I enjoy playing a wide variety of styles. Bluegrass jam sessions are preferred, but I also like playing the blues, worship music, and Ed Sheeran style loop station action. Most of playing is John Mayer, mainly because I'm in awe of what he can do with his guitar, and how it creates a mood that people can feel, no matter his style. Similar to piano, I compose music for guitar and vocals as a form of therapy and entertainment for others. If you're looking for guitar lessons, contact me below and we can potentially set up a time to meet.
I started composing in late high school. Improvisation came quite easily after listening to radio tunes and attempting to duplicate them on the keyboard. I learned much more from my professors about technique than anything else, but theory courses increased my ability to synthesize a chord progression and create a new melody. Some of my favorite students are those who approach me with something like, "I want to write a song, can you show me how?". Absolutely I will. Contact me below if this is something you're interested in.
